1993, canvas, oil, 150 x 189 cm
The habit of starting to explore a work of art from its title isn’t always helpful. Take this painting by Rimvidas Jankauskas-Kampas, for example, whose official title is Santaka (Confluence). Ok, we say: here we have a red river and green banks. But is that all? The confluence of two rivers is only one way to approach this painting. Others may see here a metaphor for a coded erotic scene. Or perhaps the painting’s artist had in mind a collision of colors or, more precisely, their convergence?
